Siamak Anvari

Composer & Sound Artist

Program note:

In Persian, the word Dôr has different meanings such as “cycle”, “turning”, “whirling” …  all of which are implied in this piece. The basic idea is the innate movement of the sounds in space. The sound spatialization happens in the same manner that the sounds have been produced (recorded), using techniques such as moving the microphone while recording. Inspired by the whirling ceremony of Sufis, circular movement is the key gesture throughout the piece. All the sound materials are recorded from an ancient frame drum called Daf. Its poetic and ritualistic function plays an important role in forming the narrative structure of the piece.

Dôr is composed for The Game of Life foundation Wave Field Synthesis system which comprises of 192 specially designed loudspeakers . Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) is a sound production technology designed specifically for spatial audio rendering. Virtual acoustic environments are simulated and synthesised using large numbers of loudspeakers which provides listeners with an immersive sonic experience.
